The Bohemian Chic Carry-On — A Two-Week Capsule

Bohemian chic natural raffia bag — Tiana Marina Anouilh

The bohemian chic wardrobe is, by its nature, built for travel. Each piece works as a single object and as part of a larger story. Silk packs flat, linen welcomes wrinkles, yak compresses to nothing in a packing cube. After many summers spent answering the same question at the boutique — "What should I pack for two weeks in the south of France / Italy / Morocco?" — we wrote it down. This guide is the complete bohemian chic travel methodology: the ten pieces, the packing logic, the rules of what to leave out, and the small luxuries that turn an ordinary suitcase into a wardrobe you would actually want to live with for two weeks.

The principles behind the capsule

Before the list, the principles. A bohemian chic travel capsule is not just "fewer clothes". It is a deliberately constructed wardrobe where:

  1. Every piece works with at least four others. No piece is allowed in the bag if it solves only one outfit. The wardrobe is multiplicative, not additive.
  2. All materials are natural. Silk, linen, cotton, leather, raffia. The wardrobe handles humidity, heat, and air-conditioning without becoming heavy or musty.
  3. The colour palette is anchored. Cream, taupe, olive, navy as anchors. One or two jewel tones in silk as accents. The whole wardrobe photographs as a unified set rather than a series of independent outfits.
  4. One craft signature accessory. The Tiana raffia bag for day, the Olivia Dar pouch for evening. These two pieces carry the bohemian chic register across every outfit they appear in.
  5. The suitcase is a 55-litre carry-on. Everything fits. The yak coat (if travelling cool-weather) goes folded on top.

The capsule — ten pieces, two weeks, every climate

The canonical Marina Anouilh travel capsule for warm-weather destinations (south of France, Italian lakes, Greek islands, Mediterranean coast):

  1. Holly Habotai Silk Shirt — cherry. A piece you can wear five times in two weeks. With trousers, knotted at the waist, under a Marrakesh jacket, alone over a swimsuit at the beach.
  2. Holly Habotai Silk Shirt — olive. Same architecture, second colourway. Travels with the cherry like a duet — cherry against navy, olive against cream.
  3. Lotus Silk Dress — orange Korean neck. The bohemian chic evening dress that earns its place because it folds to nothing and reads polished from the moment it comes out of the suitcase.
  4. Olympia Fuji Kaftan. The day-to-night kaftan. Pool, lunch, sunset terrace, all in the same piece. Belted with the Moroccan leather belt for structure, untied for ease.
  5. Marrakesh Herringbone Cotton Jacket. The mid-layer that handles the temperature drop after sundown. Folds flat, weighs nothing, works over silk shirts and silk dresses equally.
  6. Linen culottes — cream. Wide-leg, ankle-length, the canonical bohemian chic warm-weather bottom. Pair with both silk shirts, both kaftans, the Marrakesh jacket.
  7. One pair of Meher Kakalia ballet flats. The footwear that crosses cobblestones, museum floors, and a restaurant's parquet without complaint. Hand-embroidered, leather-soled, the bohemian chic shoe par excellence.
  8. A pair of leather sandals. Worn-in BOSABO or equivalent. Beachable, but elegant enough for a lunch terrace. Camel or natural leather travels best.
  9. Tiana Almond Raffia Bag. Day. Beach. Lunch. Market. Hand-woven in Madagascar over three to five days; survives ten summers of use.
  10. Olivia Dar Sequin Pouch — XL. Evening. Dinner. Sunset cocktail. The piece that turns a silk dress into a complete evening look without any other accessory.

The rules of the capsule

Each piece must work with at least four of the others. Let's prove the rule for the cherry Holly silk shirt: it works with linen culottes (outfit 1), with the Lotus dress underneath (outfit 2, layered), knotted over the Olympia kaftan (outfit 3), tucked into the Olympia kaftan dress (outfit 4), under the Marrakesh jacket with linen culottes (outfit 5). Five combinations from one piece. Multiply across ten pieces and the capsule yields more than thirty distinct outfits.

A bohemian chic capsule is multiplicative, not additive — eight pieces yield far more than eight outfits if they are chosen well. The mistake first-time packers make is bringing pieces that only work in one combination. The Olympia kaftan works in five. The Holly silk shirt in seven. The Lotus dress in three (alone, layered under jacket, with the Olivia Dar pouch). The Tiana bag in eight (every day outfit). The piece that works in one outfit only is the piece you regret bringing.

What to leave out

No jeans. No t-shirts. No sneakers. None of these are wrong items — they are wrong items for this kind of wardrobe. Bohemian chic travel is a register, and conventional casualwear breaks it. If you absolutely need running shoes for a morning walk, pack one pair and accept that they live separately from the rest of the wardrobe (worn only at dawn before the rest of the day starts).

Specifically not on the list:

  • Heels above 5 cm. They fight the fluid silhouette of the dresses. Low metallic sandals for evening; flats for day. The Marrakesh ballet flats and BOSABO sandals cover everything.
  • Pure white pieces. They pick up too much in two weeks of olive oil, sunscreen, dust. Cream, oat, sand are forgiving alternatives.
  • Synthetic fabrics. Polyester does not breathe in heat, does not drape, traps body odour. Stick to natural fibres exclusively.
  • Statement bags beyond the Tiana and Olivia Dar. A third bag adds weight and complicates outfit decisions without solving new problems.
  • Heavy jewellery. One delicate ring stack, one architectural earring set. Travelling jewellery should be wearable and replaceable; leave heirloom pieces at home.

One small luxury

A linen pillowcase, rolled in the corner of the bag. We have heard the same compliment from clients enough times to trust it: sleeping on linen, even in a hotel, makes a bohemian chic trip feel like home. Linen also stays cooler in summer hotel rooms with mediocre air-conditioning. A second linen scarf or two stuffed in the bag also serves multiple functions — cover-up at sunset, head-scarf in the wind, table napkin on a beach picnic.

The carry-on — packing logic

Everything above fits in a single 55-litre soft-shell carry-on. The packing logic:

  1. Roll the silks. Habotai silk does not crease meaningfully when rolled rather than folded. Roll the Holly shirts, the Lotus dress, the kaftans. They emerge essentially wrinkle-free.
  2. Fold the linen culottes flat. Linen welcomes wrinkles — the relaxed look is part of the register.
  3. Pack the Marrakesh jacket on top. Lined cotton jacket folds once across the back, sits on top of the rolled silks. No bulk.
  4. Sandals at the bottom, soles facing outward. Slip socks or scarves inside the shoes to fill the volume.
  5. Tiana raffia bag travels by hand, not in the suitcase. It cannot compress and is too valuable to risk in checked luggage.
  6. Olivia Dar pouch in a dust bag inside the suitcase. The sequins are delicate.
  7. A hat in hand. Wide-brim raffia hats do not pack. Either pack a soft foldable one or carry the wide-brim by hand and accept it as the price of summer.

If travelling to a cool destination in shoulder season, the yak coat (if the Stephanie Yak Long Coat is in the wardrobe) goes folded once across the top of the suitcase, no compression — wool wants to breathe, not be vacuum-packed.

Adapting the capsule for cool-weather destinations

For travel to northern Europe in autumn, the alpine winter destinations, or any climate below approximately 12°C, the capsule shifts:

  • Swap one Holly silk shirt for a Marrakesh corduroy jacket as mid-layer
  • Add the Stephanie yak coat as outer layer (folded on top of suitcase)
  • Swap linen culottes for wool wide-leg culottes
  • Swap leather sandals for leather ankle boots
  • Swap raffia hat for wool felt hat or Madagascar leather hat
  • Keep both silk shirts as base layers under everything

The same ten-piece principle applies. The mix shifts; the methodology persists.

Three sample outfits from the capsule

Day on the lake

Olympia Fuji Kaftan + Moroccan leather belt + Tiana almond raffia bag + leather sandals + wide-brim raffia hat. Three accessories, one signature piece, one craft material.

Long Mediterranean lunch

Holly silk shirt in cherry, knotted at the waist + linen culottes in cream + Marrakesh ballet flats + Tiana mini bag crossbody + single architectural earring. Three accessories, two craft materials (silk, raffia).

Sunset dinner

Lotus silk dress in orange + Olivia Dar sequin pouch + low metallic sandals + delicate ring stack. Two accessories, one signature piece, one bright element.

FAQ

What if I am travelling to multiple climates in one trip?

Bring both versions of the capsule. The summer one fits in the bag; the cool-weather pieces (yak coat folded, wool culottes) go on top or in a separate compression sack. This is the only scenario where the capsule grows beyond ten pieces.

Can I substitute different pieces if I do not own these specific items?

Yes. The methodology is more important than the exact pieces. Two habotai silk shirts (any colour). One silk column dress. One kaftan. One transitional jacket. Wide linen trousers. Two pairs of leather shoes (one flat, one sandal). Two bags (one day, one evening). The principle is the same: ten pieces, all working with at least four others.

How do I avoid the "I have nothing to wear" feeling on day five?

Plan three to five outfits before you leave. Pin them on a wall, photograph them, save them on your phone. The capsule supports thirty outfits but you only need five to ten across two weeks. Pre-planned, the wardrobe never runs out.

What about luggage in the rain?

Soft-shell carry-ons are water-resistant for short rain bursts. For longer wet travel, pack the silks in a dry bag inside the suitcase. Pack the raffia bag in a dust bag separately. Yak coats are naturally water-resistant.

How long does the capsule last as a travel investment?

The pieces hold up to two weeks of two trips per year for over a decade with reasonable care. Cost-per-wear over ten years on the ten-piece capsule is among the lowest of any luxury wardrobe configuration we have measured.

Closing

That is the bohemian chic carry-on. Two weeks, every climate, one bag, and the quiet satisfaction of having packed nothing twice. The wardrobe was built for this kind of travel — multi-climate, multi-context, long-itinerary — because that is how Marina Anouilh clients actually live. The capsule is not a constraint; it is the wardrobe operating at its full design intent.
